The morning<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">of the verdict I hiked into redwood forest<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">with a man I first met when I was not<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">much older than you the night you died.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">I wanted to walk up to the mountain laurel trail<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">because I love wild laurel even when it\u2019s not<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">blossoming. Perhaps you had heard of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">enchanted forests when you were a little boy \u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">the redwood forest was like that,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">a greening deepness shawled with moss,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">the great-girthed trees seeming to touch sky.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The immense agate of forest shimmered<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">with blues among leaves lit to emerald,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">roots rising up like runes over the trail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Near a surprise of Indian pipes, where<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">the shiny laurel leaves began to show,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">I spotted a black torso beyond my feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Yes, a magical forest \u2026 I saw you.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">But when my heart recovered its beat,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">I drew closer and the torso became<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">a black hoodie just my size. I knelt<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">to pull the fallen blackness on, warmly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">soft the way your skin must have felt<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">the evening your heart lost its bountiful<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">beat. I always did hate Florida\u2019s gated<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">communities like above ground graves<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">for the living dead. Trayvon, I wish<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">you had wandered into an enchanted forest<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">that would have protected you from being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">hunted down. I wish you could have<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">happily eaten millions of Skittles, traveled<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">and found a woman who loved your skin<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">and you as a starry night. After emerging<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">from redwoods, my old sweetheart and I<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">heard the verdict on NPR.
