Submission Guidelines

Founded in 2007, Pluck! promotes—through publication and in-depth explorations—the contemporary poetry, fiction, nonfiction, visual and media art of artists and writers who identify with multicultural experiences based in the Appalachian region. Pluck! is published year-round online at http://pluckjournal.uky.edu published through the University of Kentucky.

Pluck! welcomes submissions of reviews, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. We currently publish two (2) online issues each year. The journal’s reading period is July 15 to August 30 for Fall issue and January 15 to March 1 Spring Issue.   Submissions received outside this reading period will remain unread. Submit your work at any time during our reading periods.

For prose submissions, submit one (1) short story, or one (1) self-contained novel excerpt, or creative non-fiction piece of no more than 5,000 words. Flash fiction submit up to three (3) pieces no more 750 words apiece in one single file in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format.

For poetry submissions, submit up to three (3) poems totaling no more than six (6) pages in one single file in .doc., .docx, or .pdf format.

For book reviews, submit  one (1) review no more than 1500 words in one single file in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format.

Email submissions to submissions.pluckjournal@gmail.com. In the subject line of your email write the medium or genre, semicolon, the “submission” (ex. Photography: submission, Flash Fiction: submission, or CNF: submission).  The body of your email should contain a cover letter with a brief biography (written in the third person and fewer than 100 words). Attach submission to body of email. Pluck! only accepts submissions via email.

Accepted file types: .doc, .docx, .pdf, . jpeg, .mp3, .png.

Any submissions that do not adhere to our guidelines will be withdrawn from consideration.

Pluck! does not accept previously published work (includes work published on social media).  Simultaneous submissions are acceptable as long as they are indicated as such and authors immediately notify the editors if said work has been selected for publication in another periodical, either in print or online.  Contact pluckjournal@gmail.com

Upon publication all rights revert to the authors and artists. We request that all subsequent publication of the words found in this publication acknowledge Pluck! The Journal of Affrilachian Arts & Culture as the original publisher.
